Game scene from Closure

Closure is a 2D - side-scroller - Computer game of indie - Developer Eyebrow Interactive. It was first in 2009 as an in browser playable Flash game developed until 27 March 2012, first on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 on September 7, 2012 on Windows PC and Mac , and finally in the 19th December 2012 for the Linux released has been. The game received great reviews and won several awards because of its innovative gameplay of light and darkness .

Game principle and plot

The character controlled by the player wanders through a bizarre, monochrome 2D world, where only light shows what exists. Where there is no light, the play figure falls into a bottomless abyss. With the help of light sources (balls of light, spotlights and mirrors) the player must make the underground and walls visible in order not to fall into the darkness. However, he can also use the darkness to make obstacles, such as a column, disappear in order to bypass them. In this environment you have to solve puzzles and finally find your way to the exit. This usually has to be unlocked beforehand with a key or with the help of several light sources. The player can interact with the environment, such as balls of light, keys, boxes, switches or cannons, but he can only carry one object at a time. In order to be able to play the game to the very end, the player has to find glowing moths in some levels , which are used in the last level.

There is no prehistory and there are only rare indications that suggest a background story. The game description by the developers is: Play as a strange spider-like demon who explores the stories of three human characters through beautiful, eerie environments such as a decrepit factory, a murky forest, an abandoned carnival, and the strange, surreal realm that connects them together. ("Play as a peculiar spider-like demon who explores the fates of three people through wonderful and eerie environments such as a dilapidated factory, a gloomy forest, an abandoned hustle and bustle and a strange, surreal realm that connects all of these."). The few clues and the ending leave a lot of room for interpretation.

Technology and development

In January 2009, Tyler Glaiel developed the game on Flash basis in two months and published it on Newgrounds . This was so successful with users and critics that Glaiel decided to develop a commercial version of the game based on a new engine using C ++ . As in the Flash version, Jon Schubbe took on the art design again, while this time Christopher Rhyne composed the soundtrack and created the sound effects. During development, pre-release versions of the game were shown at several conventions , such as MineCon 2011, to promote the game and collect feedback. After three years of development (the pure programming time was only 9 months), Closure was initially released on the Playstation 3 in March 2012, but initially only in North America due to the fact that Sony America and Sony Europe are separate companies with their own certification processes . Since the PS3 version wasn't as successful as hoped, the developers turned their attention to the Steam release. The Windows and Mac OSX versions followed in September of the same year, and finally the Linux version in December 2012. In contrast to the PS3 version, the PC version has an unlockable developer comment , a higher resolution and basic tools for mod development.

The game was included in the Humble Indie Bundle 7 in December 2012 . A DRM- free version has been available through the Humble Store since June 2015 .

The album with the music of Christopher Rhyne was released on March 27, 2012 on Bandcamp .

The game received consistently positive reviews. On Metacritic, Closure received a 78% rating based on eight ratings as of October 2015. The innovative gameplay of light and shadow was praised. The atmosphere, which is carried by the idiosyncratic art design and the powerful, sometimes dissonant soundtrack, received a lot of praise. The testers also emphasized the pleasantly increasing level of difficulty. In the tests, Closure was often compared to limbo or braid , behind which it need not hide. However, the lack of a background story, a partly varied puzzle design and minor problems with the control were criticized.

The game received the Innovation Award in 2009 at the IndieCade Festival , the 2010 Excellence in Audio award at the Independent Games Festival , winner of the PAX 10 Independent Games Showcase, and the 2012 Grand Prize with $ 100,000 in the Indie Game Challenge during the DICE Summit in Las Vegas .
