action

Kent McCoy is a real estate agent and a caring family man. When the promised clown fails at his son's birthday party, he finds an intact clown costume in one of the houses sold. He puts it on and plays "Dumbo" at the party, which makes it a huge success. But the next day the bitter realization follows: No matter what he tries, he won't get the costume off. The wig and nose also stick. The attempt to tackle the costume with a box cutter ends in a bad injury. Even when his pregnant wife lends a hand to Meg, she can only tear off the nose that is eaten by the family dog. His injury is being treated in the hospital, but the doctors have no advice either.

The next day, Kent does an investigation and comes across a costume dealer named Karlsson who promises to help him. In fact, it's not a clown costume, but the skin of a demon named Cloyne who needs five young children as sacrifices, one for each cold winter month. The demon's skin is indestructible. Karlsson stuns Kent and tries to cut off his head, the only "healing method" he knows. But Kent managed to break free and overpowered Karlsson. He tries to take the man to the police, but the metamorphosis begins. Kent is losing control of his body, which is becoming more and more demon-like. He seriously injured Karlsson in a car accident.

He then hides in a nearby hotel, where he tries to kill himself. But he is apparently immortal, because after being shot in the head he wakes up unharmed. Even the attempt to behead oneself fails. He accepts his fate and finds his first victim in a child in the neighborhood. In the meantime, his wife is feverishly trying to find a way. She can overpower and tie Kent, but Jack frees his father again. The next victim of the clown is therefore a boy who had previously bullied Jack.

Meanwhile, Meg allies with Karlsson. Karlsson first kills the family dog, who was also affected by the curse. Together they now want to drive out the demon. Meg finds out that Karlsson himself was once possessed by the demon, but that his brother fed him five terminally ill children. Then he could take off the costume. While she is still struggling with how to get hold of her husband, he starts slamming in an arcade and finds two more victims. When they confront the demon, this Meg suggests a deal. Another child and he would give her husband away. When Meg actually brings a child to the agreed meeting point, the demon does not appear.

Meg rushes back to her house, where the demon tries to get to Jack. Meg finally succeeds in overpowering the demon and chopping off his head with a hammer. The police pack the clown costume as evidence.

background

The film is based on a Faketrailer by filmmakers Jon Watts and Christopher D. Ford, who uploaded it to YouTube in 2010 . In this Faketrailer Eli Roth was named as the producer, who was then repeatedly asked about the film. Instead of suing the two filmmakers, he got involved in the production of the film. The film was shot and completed in Ottawa in 2013 . Eli Roth can be seen in a cameo as the clown Frowny.

Eli Roth gave Watts the instruction to use as many splatter effects as possible , which could then be successively reduced in order to satisfy the MPAA . In fact, the film passed the exam without any problems. The film had its DVD premiere in Italy on November 13, 2014. The movie poster was censored there. In the UK, it was released on DVD on March 2, 2015, after having previously been shown at some film festivals. In Germany, a DVD and Bluray version about Tiberius Film was released on March 1, 2016. An uncut publication was also possible here. The film is being marketed in Germany exclusively through Amazon.com , Media Markt and Saturn .

The film plays with coulrophobia , the fear of clowns, as it was picked up and spread in film and literature by Stephen King's Es and the television series American Horror Story , but also by real people like the serial killer John Wayne Gacy . The transformation of the main character into a demon is based on body horror films like David Cronenberg's Die Fliege , which according to Watts served as a reference.

Reviews

Matthias Bogner from the magazine X Rated described the film as "a macabre body horror, which tells the transformation of its likable main actor into a deformed monster clown almost dramatically in the style of a character study ."

Max Link was similarly praised in the horror magazine Virus :

"Simply good psychological thriller with an occult influence, which removes all humor from the clown topic and replaces it with a lot of cold fear and a little warm blood."

- Max Link : Virus 03/2016
