The Clusius rockrose ( Cistus clusii ) is a species from the genus rockrose ( Cistus ) and thus the family of the rockrose family (Cistaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Clusius rock rose is a heavily branched shrub that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters.

The opposite leaves are sessile. The simple, needle-shaped, single-veined leaf blades are linear with a length of 10 to 25 millimeters and a width of only 1 to 2 millimeters and the edge is rolled over. They are dark green on the top and white felted on the underside.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to May. The terminal inflorescence consists of single or compound zymous groups with several flowers, or the flowers appear individually. The flower stalks are hairy whitish.

The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope and have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. There are three small and triangular, green to reddish, whitish hairy sepals that are 5 to 8 millimeters long. The five white petals are roof-shaped and obovate to wedge-shaped. There are many, relatively short stamens . The ovary is on top. The short style ends in a large, capitate stigma .

The fruit with a long, persistent calyx remains on the plant for a long time. The small, loculicidal and woody capsule fruit contains many seeds. The small, brown seeds are hard and about 1 millimeter in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The Clusius rockrose occurs in Morocco , Algeria, Tunisia , Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands , France, Italy and Sicily . It thrives in maquis and garigue .

Systematics

The first description of Cistus clusii was in 1824 by Michel Félix Dunal in Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle , Prodr. 1, page 266. For the first time, however, it was depicted long before by Charles de l'Écluse (Latinized Clusius) in his work Rariorum plantarum historia (1601) on page 80. A synonym of Cistus clusii Dunal is Cistus rosmarinifolius Pourr. non all.

Some authors have about two subspecies:

Cistus clusii Dunal subsp. clusii : It only occurs in Spain.
Cistus clusii subsp. multiflorus Demoly : It occurs only in Mallorca , Ibiza and Spain.
