action

Barnaby and Maxine Pierce (played by Richard Dreyfuss and Judy Davis ) are a long-time couple in a relationship that, after both having sought their fortune in extramarital affairs, is apparently coming to an end; After all, it is Maxine who demands a divorce and wants to sell their Connecticut home. The house has already been advertised for sale, so they decide to spend the last time on vacation together in Los Angeles, where their son Benjamin ( David Julian Hirsch ) lives, who is currently planning to get married.

The journey through the continent turns into a road movie of a special kind, as you decide at the same time to visit acquaintances, friends and lovers from the past who live by the wayside, such as Maxine's professor from university days ( Maximilian Schell ), Barnabys old friend Stanley (played by director Mazursky) and Stacey, Barnaby and Maxine's pregnant daughter ( Selma Blair ). All these encounters lead the couple to ever new revelations of past events with corresponding consequences for the emotional life of the couple, which repeatedly develops feelings of hate and love alternately; the viewer remains in the uncertain until the brilliant end at Los Angeles airport whether the two will get together again for a new beginning or not.
