Cochlostoma subalpinum is a land-living snail species from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand wound case is up to 8.1 mm high (7 to 7.5 mm) high and up to 3.4 mm (2.5 to 3 mm) wide. It is elongated-cone-shaped with a blunt apex and a comparatively narrow base. There are eight (7 to 9) well-arched coils that increase slowly and regularly and are separated from each other by a deep seam. The last turn rises a little and is somewhat widened towards the mouth. The mouth is almost vertical and is rounded in the frontal view, slightly angled in the parietal region. The sculpture consists of evenly fine, densely arranged, slightly crooked and curved ribs that merge into a fine stripe pattern on the last turn.

The last turn is somewhat widened and rises towards the mouth. The mouth is vertical, the edge of the mouth turned up like a collar. The outer edge is thin and sharp, the inner edge blunt and thick. The spindle ear is only indicated, rounded at obtuse angles and not adjacent to the penultimate passage.

The housing is yellowish-horn-colored or on black-gray with up to three stain bands. The middle band is almost always extinguished, the lower band very weak. Only the upper band with red spots below the seam is clearly visible.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Cochlostoma subalpinum extends from the Ligurian Alps (north-west Italy) to the Alpes-Maritimes (south-east France). Only a few, scattered occurrences are known to date: Mont Peyrevieille and Mont Torrage east of Saorge , Alpes-Maritimes department . In the Valle di Pesio in the province of Cuneo ( Piedmont , Italy) the animals live at 1,800 m above sea level. Further deposits were found in the province of Imperia .

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described by Napoleone Pini in 1885 as Pomatias subalpinus . Wilhelm Kobelt placed them in the genus or subgenus Cochlostoma (Auritus) Westerlund, 1883. The fauna Europaea, however, now places them in the genus or subgenus Cochlostoma (Turritus) Westerlund, 1883.

The species is divided into two subspecies:

  • Cochlostoma subalpinum subalpinum (Pini, 1884)
  • Cochlostoma subalpinum fossile (Sacco, 1894)
