The Codex Palatinus germanicus 10 is an early modern manuscript from the former Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg . The Codex belongs to the Codices Palatini germanici , the German-language manuscripts of the Palatina, which have been kept in the Heidelberg University Library since 1816 ; The signature of the Heidelberg University Library and the common scientific name is Cod. Pal. germ. 10 (short form: Cpg 10 ).

The codex reproduces the letter of Aristeas in German, in a copy of Dietrich Reisach's translation from the end of the 15th / beginning of the 16th century. The manuscript originated in Bavaria (Franconia) in the 16th century.

The codex is a parchment manuscript with 32 leaves. On leaf 11v one is Reklamante entered. The foliation of the 17th century counts text sheets 1–29; the front and back blank pages have modern page numbers.

The sheet size of the codex is 21.4 × 14.5 cm, with a writing space of 15.5–16 × 10.5 cm with 32 to 37 lines per page; all sheets have a line structure drawn in ink. Continuous writing is a bastarda by one hand, probably a typist's handwriting .

The headings and many initials are highlighted in red, as is the translator's dedication (sheet 1r), his preface (sheet 2r) and his closing speech (sheet 29r). The only striking ornament of the manuscript is a gold-colored D initial over 12 lines on a gold-colored framed field with the coat of arms of the Electoral Palatinate in the inner field of the letter (sheet 1r).

The manuscript was restored by Hans Heiland in 1962.

The Codex is a well-preserved Ottheinricheinband provided, probably by Jörg Bernhardt customized, that of elector Ottheinrich 1550 specifically employed Buchbinder: a brown leather cover with blind printed embossments and corner fittings made of brass, the two belt Book Close were partially supplemented later.

Blind prints of David playing the harp , of apostles and of the resurrection of Christ are stamped on the front cover , in the middle a gilded plate shows the portrait of Ottheinrich with the caption OTTHAINRICH VON. G. G. // PFALZGRAVE BEY RHEIN // HERTZOG IN NIDERN VND // OBERN BAIRN , including the year of manufacture 1553. The same blind print motifs can be found on the back cover, here in the middle a gold-plated coat of arms of the Palatinate with lettering above ( MDZ : with the time) and below ( OHP : Ottheinrich Pfalzgraf).

origin

A motto preceding the text of the manuscript (sheet 2ar) indicates 1546, probably as the year of the first acquisition; Ottheinrich owned the codex at the latest when the binding was produced in 1553. The writing language is Bavarian.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

The codex is a copy of a text printed by Johann Schönsperger in Augsburg in 1502 , the translation of Aristeas' letter by Dietrich Reisach , which in turn is based on the translation from Greek into Latin by Matthaeus Palmerius (died 1483).
