The Codex is a paper manuscript with 81 leaves. The 17th century foliation counts the 68 pages of text, leaving out the blank pages in front of and behind the text, as well as five blank pages between pages 14 and 15 and one blank page between pages 49 and 50. These are blank pages provided with modern counting. A custodian can be found on sheet 26v.

The sheet size of the codex is 22 × 14.5 cm, with a writing space of 15.5–18 × 10.5–11 cm described with 19 to 26 lines per page. Consistent writing is a bastarda of at least three hands.

The chapter headings are done in red ink and red Lombards extend up to three lines.

cover

The manuscript is handed down in an Ottheinrich binding, a brown leather binding with the gilded portrait of Ottheinrich in a cartridge on the front cover, with the abbreviations OH (Ottheinrich) and PC (Pfalzgraf, Churfürst), also with an angel's head above and the year 1558 below Cartridge, both also gold-plated. The gilded coat of arms of the Palatinate is reproduced on the back cover.

origin

The writing language of the handwriting is Bavarian. A motto at the bottom of sheet 1r (".DCA / io B dvx") can be identified as the ownership entry of Duke Johann von Mosbach-Neumarkt (1443–1486). Johann was enrolled as a canon of the Diocese of Speyer at the University of Heidelberg in 1454, elected rector of the University of Freiburg in 1466 and had been provost of Augsburg since 1468. According to an inheritance contract of 1490, after his death and the death of his brother Otto II. Von Mosbach-Neumarkt (1435–1499), who had remained childless, the property of the Mosbach line, including Johann's book collection, fell to the Electoral Palatinate. The manuscript was recorded in the inventory of the older palace library when it was cataloged in 1556/59, then again in the inventory of the Holy Spirit Library in 1581.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.
