The Codex Palatinus germanicus 8 is an early modern manuscript from the former Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg . The Codex belongs to the Codices Palatini germanici , the German-language manuscripts of the Palatina, which have been kept in the Heidelberg University Library since 1816 ; The signature of the Heidelberg University Library and the common scientific name is Cod. Pal. germ. 8 (short form: Cpg 8 ).

The composite manuscript contains letters and other documents from the 16th and 17th centuries, primarily those to and from the Palatinate electors.

description

Cod. Pal. germ. 8, sheet 78r: Letter from Elector Frederick IV of the Palatinate to the mayor and the city council of Nuremberg, May 1, 1597 (page 1 of 2)
Cod. Pal. germ. 8, sheet 78v: Letter from Elector Frederick IV of the Palatinate to the mayor and the city council of Nuremberg, May 1, 1597 (page 2 of 2)

Most of the documents in the Codex are made of paper, sheets 2 and 258 are parchment manuscripts.

The total of 338 sheets of this manuscript have different formats (documents, letters, notes). They used to be tied together in 11 or 12 fascicles . On the pages of the manuscript there are pencil entries by a previous editor on fascicle counting (fascicle 1: sheet 1ar; fasc. 2: sheet 13r; fasc. 3: sheet 42ar; fasc. 4: sheet 68r; fascicle 5: sheet 95r ; Fasc. 6: sheet 129r; fasc. 7: no entry given (!); Fasc. 8: sheet 185r; fasc. 9: sheet 211r; fasc. 10: sheet 235r; fasc. 11: sheet 259r; fasc. 12 : Sheet 279r).

A modern pencil foliation counts the text pages from 1 to 329 (sheet margin lower right, sometimes upper right), but originally the sheets were arranged differently, as can be inferred from the surviving remains of the older Roman foliation from the 17th century (sheet margin top right). On the pages of the manuscript, a chapter division is also noted in pencil, probably from the 19th century.

The handwriting suffers from incipient, sometimes severe, ink corrosion ; some leaves show old mold growth .

In 1908 the codex was restored by the Heidelberg court and university bookbinder Carl Hohmeister, the manuscript was re-bound, all pages were individually joined to folds and the codex was given a new half leather cover with a spine label made of red leather.

origin

Originally with the signature Cod. Pal. Germ. 8 provided manuscript was in the inventory of the Vaticana "recorded as missing or as possibly in Latin".

The librarian Friedrich Wilken , commissioned with the cataloging and return of the German-language parts of the Bibliotheca Palatina from the Vaticana to Heidelberg, received an unbound fascicle with text documents of various kinds in Rome (he names: directory of a coin collection; authentication via a goods transport; various recipes) . However, the contents of the manuscript mentioned by Wilken in 1817 do not match the contents cataloged later (Wille 1903; Zimmermann 2003), but why this is so is unclear. The contents of the collective manuscript, which has been cataloged since 1903, are letters and documents from the Electoral Palatinate State Archives or from the Elector's Office.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.
