Cody David Kessler (* 11. May 1993 in Bakersfield , California ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He is currently a free agent .

Early years

Kessler went to high school in his native Bakersfield. He later went to the University of Southern California . Initially, he was the second quarterback for the college football team behind Matt Barkley . From 2013 he was starting quarterback . He scored 88 touchdowns and 19 interceptions at college . In total, he threw passes for 10,339 yards .

NFL

Cleveland Browns

Kessler was selected 93rd in the third round in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns . On June 8, 2016, Kessler signed a four-year contract with the Browns. Initially, he was meant to be the third quarterback behind Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown . On the first day of the 2016 season, Griffin III was injured and placed on the Injured Reserve List . McCown was injured on the following day, so that Kessler started against the Miami Dolphins on the third day . In his first game, he threw passes for 244 yards. The Browns lost the game by 24:30 in overtime . On Matchday 4 against the Washington Redskins , he threw his first touchdown in the NFL. On Matchday 11, in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , Kessler was injured. On Matchday 16, in the game against the San Diego Chargers , Kessler replaced Robert Griffin III again after an injury in the fourth quarter. That game was also the Browns' first and only win of the season.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Kessler was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 28, 2018 for a seven-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft . There he initially served as a backup for Blake Bortles . After the Jaguars fell significantly short of expectations with a 3-8 balance after week 12, Kessler was named as the new starting quarterback on November 26, 2018. Kessler was released on May 9, 2019.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles signed him on May 12, 2019 . On August 30, 2019, before the season started, Kessler was released.

New England Patriots

On September 25, 2019, Kessler joined the New England Patriots . He was released on October 15, but was brought back two weeks later. On April 1, 2020, Kessler was fired again by the Patriots. He was not used in any game of the Patriots.
