Cody Wilson, 2012

Cody Rutledge Wilson (born January 31, 1988 ) is an American former law student and founder of Defense Distributed , an organization that is engaged in the planning, development and (initially experimental) production of freely available ( open source ) weapon designs , the so-called Wiki Weapons , which can be produced using 3D printing processes .

Wilson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin law school . He was voted one of the 15 Most Dangerous People in the World by Wired magazine . Wilson describes himself as a crypto anarchist and a libertarian .

Defense Distributed

Defense Distributed was founded in 2012. Wilson is currently the only official (press) spokesman for the organization, as whose "co-founder" and "director" he describes himself.

Development of a firearm that can be produced using a 3D printer

In May 2013, it was reported that Defense Distributed had succeeded in making a working firearm almost entirely through a 3D printer that had successfully completed a test shooting. After the Defense Distributed plans became known , the 3D printer manufacturer Stratasys, Inc only threatened legal action and reclaiming the 3D printer leased to Wilson. Shortly afterwards, the leasing contract with Wilson was canceled with immediate effect and a team was even sent to him to pick up the 3D printer the next day. Wilson later bought a 3D printer on Ebay.

Wilson was then questioned by the US Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). As a result, he was granted his universal weapons license, which allows him to manufacture and sell his self-developed components. However, at the beginning he had not even planned to make the components available online for free download.

The pistol consists of 16 individual parts, 15 of which can be made with a 3D printer. Only the firing pin of the weapon is made of metal and consists of a commercially available nail. Defense Distributed gave the weapon the name Liberator (Liberator). The naming of the weapon was based on the FP-45 Liberator , a simple single-shot pistol that the USA dropped from the air during World War II to support partisans.

Defense Distributed made the construction plans freely available on its website. According to the company, the construction plans have been downloaded over 100,000 times. On May 9, Wilson had to delete the blueprints from the website after the US State Department accused him of violating arms export regulations by publishing them. Nevertheless, the blueprints are unrestrictedly available on torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay .

On May 15, 2013, the German private broadcaster ProSieben showed a short documentary about the construction of the weapon. Under the supervision of a licensed weapon manufacturing expert , the editorial team used the published construction plans to produce the weapon for the end customer market using a printer. Cody Wilson had used a professional industrial 3D printer. When the pistol was tested under the direction of a weapons expert , it turned out that although the weapon can basically detonate a cartridge , the construction made entirely of plastic is completely unsuitable for a weapon. After just one test shot, due to the high gas pressure of the explosion, all of the functionally relevant parts of the construction broke .

On November 14, 2013, the station 3sat showed the science documentary How 3D printing is changing our world , produced in cooperation with ZDF , in which attempts were made to reproduce the plastic weapon using a low-priced 3D printer under the supervision of a gunsmith . Since the finished construction made a very unstable impression, the weapons expert refrained from a test for safety reasons and classified the construction as a danger to the shooter.

Condemnation

Cody Wilson was charged with child molestation in the United States for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old in an Austin hotel in August 2019. He pleaded guilty to "harming a child" in September 2019 in order to avoid jail time. He is required to register as a sex offender, pay a US $ 1,200 fine and US $ 4,840 in compensation, serve 475 community hours, and be monitored for seven years. During this time he is not allowed to drink alcohol or carry weapons.
