Colchani is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Colchani is a town in the province of Antonio Quijarro and the third largest town in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of Uyuni . The village is located at an altitude of 3668  m on the eastern bank of the Salar de Uyuni , with 12,000 km² the largest salt lake in the world, and is a center of salt production on the salt lake.

Colchani is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.

The climate in this region at the Salar de Uyuni is arid , only from December to March there is significant rainfall between 20 and 45 mm per month (see climate diagram Uyuni), in the remaining eight months there is only sporadic rainfall. The mean annual temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C, the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 5 ° C in June / July and 11 ° C from November to March.

Colchani is located 177 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí, the Ruta 5 highway leads 198 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Uyuni . From there the Ruta 30 , which leads north to Challapata , after 21 km through Colchani .

The railway line, initiated by the then President Aniceto Arce in 1889, runs through Colchani and runs from Uyuni to Ollagüe .
