The Colo River is a river in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales .

course

It is created by the confluence of Wollemi Creek and Capertee River in Wollemi National Park in the northern part of the Blue Mountains . Most of the river runs through the national park. The middle course is completely inaccessible, wild and very hidden. The wilderness was saved from destruction through development, deforestation and the construction of reservoirs by the Colo Wilderness Preservation Society and other environmental protection organizations in the late 1970s . The Blue Mountains National Park , together with the Wollemi National Park to the World Heritage explains, partly because of the discovery of the Wollemia that is often described as a "living fossil" from the time of the dinosaurs.

The Colo River Gorge has many rapids that alternate with deep pools.

The lower course of the river emerges from the wilderness and flows through a lovely, agriculturally used, narrow valley. It flows into the Hawkesbury River at Lower Portland , north of Windsor . The main tributary of the Colo River is the Wollangambe River .

Although Wollemi National Park is very close to Greater Sydney , it is considered the largest unspoilt area in New South Wales. Local volunteer groups, such as Friends of the Colo , have been helping to rid the national park and its surroundings of weeds for decades.

The best way to see the wonderful but inaccessible canyons of the Colo River is to float down the river on an air mattress from hiking trails like the Bob Turner's Track at Colo Heights .
