The ColognePride (from English Cologne for Cologne and Pride for pride , self-esteem) is a two-week annual program in and around Cologne with supporting events for the rights of gays , lesbians , bisexuals and transgender people .

The highlight is the three-day Christopher Street Day - street festival on the first full July weekend, one at the end of Demonstration Parade will take place in the center of Cologne. The ColognePride has been organized by the Kölner Lesben- und Schwulentag e. V. (KLuST e.V.).

History of the ColognePride

Demonstration 2015: Foot group with banner against global homophobia

All events worldwide with the name Pride , Christopher Street Day or Stonewall Memorial go back to the first known uprising of homosexuals and other sexual minorities against police arbitrariness in New York's Christopher Street : In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, Stonewall took place in the bar Inn the so-called Stonewall uprising took place. This day has been commemorated with demonstrations and celebrations every year since the 1970s.

Since the 80s in North Rhine-Westphalia, under the name Gay Freedom Day, the Stonewall riots have been commemorated in annually changing cities. In 1991, Cologne was again the venue for Lesbian / Gay Freedom Day . The sponsoring association Cologne Lesbian and Gay Day e. V. (KLuST) was founded, which organizes the ColognePride. In addition to the cultural framework events, the demonstration has a motto every year. In the beginning it was about gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people showing their presence, but since 1998 the demonstrations have been characterized by political demands for same-sex marriage or protection from discrimination .

History of the name

The Cologne Pride was originally based on the eponymous Trägerverein Cologne Gays and Lesbians named. From 1992 to 2001, in the course of harmonization with other events in Germany and Switzerland, the name Christopher Street Day , CSD for short, prevailed.

Inspired by the name Europride and in the course of increasing Europeanization, the organizers have only been using the name ColognePride since 2003 . Throughout Europe, the name Pride is used for similar events with a gay and lesbian parade .

Europride

In 2002, Cologne was the venue for the annual Europride . This major event takes place alternately every year in a European metropolis. In the run-up to the Europride, there was resistance in Cologne from the initiative "More calm in the old town", which wanted to demonstrate against the major event because of the feared noise pollution. The conflict was resolved in advance by negotiating the mayor Fritz Schramma (CDU) with the spokesmen of the citizens' initiative. The Europride brought 53 million euros to the city from outside visitors.

ColognePride today

Today the ColognePride is a roof for hundreds of events. The highlight and conclusion is the several-hour parade through the center of Cologne on the first Sunday in July. It is an exception to the other CSD parades in Germany, which take place on Saturdays.

On this weekend, the city festival with stands, show stages and open-air disco takes place in the old town around Alter Markt , Heumarkt , Gürzenich and Rathausplatz. Other important events are the Schaafenstrasse Festival on the last weekend in June and the WomenPride and FantasyPride in Phantasialand in Brühl .

In terms of the number of visitors stated by the organizer, the Cologne Pride Parade is the largest event of its kind in Germany and the third largest in Europe.

WomenPride

WomenPride is a two-week, voluntarily organized event program for lesbian women as part of ColognePride. According to its own account, it is the only program in the world that is aimed only at women within a Gay Pride . Following the program, the participants will also demonstrate at the ColognePride demo parade for equality and rights.

The WomenPride Weekend was launched in 2005 by a lesbian board member of KLuST eV in Cologne. For one weekend there was a comprehensive program for women in order to specifically increase the number of lesbian program items and visitors. A year later, the program was extended to two weeks and the WomenPride Festival was held for the first time as an integral part of ColognePride .
