The Color 20 was the first color television set in the GDR , developed by the central laboratory for radio and television reception technology ( Dresden ) and built from 1969 by the manufacturer RFT in Staßfurt on the twentieth anniversary of the republic on October 7, 1969, when color television was also introduced in the GDR has been.

While in West Germany only color televisions with electron tubes were available at that time , the Color 20 was one of the first color television sets to be fully transistorized (except for the picture tube and three high-voltage rectifiers EY51 in the first sets ) and thus had a lower power consumption than the one with Devices equipped with tubes (approx. 160  watts compared to 280 up to 350 watts for comparable West German devices). The screen diagonal was 59 cm and the set was designed for the Secam color standard . The retail price in the GDR was 3700 marks . Western television broadcasts in PAL could only be received in color with a decoder upgrade .

The built-in Soviet color picture tube 59LK3Z , which was also used in the Soviet Raduga and Ruby color televisions, was known for its susceptibility to failure. Due to high-voltage flashovers inside, overvoltages penetrated the device from time to time, causing damage to the color video output stages in particular. As a replacement for the Soviet color picture tube, the West German A56-120X or Japanese picture tubes were installed later , if they were available.

The successor to the Color 20 was the Color 21 (1973) Color 22 (1975). In 1976, the successor generation, the Chromat , came onto the market with a completely new chassis. Later some of the devices were delivered from the factory with a PAL decoder. The last devices in this series with the susceptible Russian picture tubes were the Novamat / Novatron .

With the Color 40 (1989) there was a device for the 40th anniversary of the republic, which however has nothing in common with the Color 20 apart from a similarity in the name . The first version of the Color 40 had a cable tuner , remote control and a Japanese 67 cm precision inline picture tube (A63NCQ00X08), but neither teletext , SCART nor stereo reception. However, SCART and teletext could be retrofitted without any problems and were installed directly ex works in later versions, a stereo version was only made for export and can be viewed as a prototype in series production. All models came from the state-owned company VEB Fernsehgerätewerk Staßfurt , an RFT company.
