The Seebeckwerft container ship 700 TEU was a type of refrigerated container ship that was built in three units for the Hamburg Süd shipping company . The medium-sized full container ships were third generation container ships.

history

Hamburg Süd used the ships of the Columbus-Victoria series after the start of delivery in the Australia / New Zealand-North America service, later the ships were employed for a long time in the South American voyage. The size and design of the new type of ship from the Seebeck shipyard in Bremerhaven was also designed for other shipping areas. By modifying the cooling systems and equipping them with on-board lifting tools, the requirements of other shipping companies could be met relatively well and without problems. There were several types of motorization available. As of 1986, eight passengers could be taken. The three ships were sold to the Singapore- based shipping company Pacific International Lines in 1993/94 and operated there for between nine and 14 years before they were sold for demolition.

The Columbus Louisiana class represents a further development of the class.

Technical details

The Seebeckwerft 700 TEU ships had superstructures arranged aft and seven cargo holds that were equipped with removable cell guides . Initially, the ships could transport a total of 700, later up to 750  TEU . They were characterized by a particularly high proportion of connections for refrigerated containers and pioneered the further development of refrigerated container shipping. 336 refrigerated containers (20 feet) based on the porthole principle, which were supplied via cooling rods from ship-mounted cargo refrigeration systems , could be moved below deck. There were connections for transport to the upper deck for a further 154 refrigerated containers. In competition with conventional reefer vessels , this requirement arose especially for the traditional routes of North America and Australia / New Zealand , where the series was used. The decentralized cooling system was controlled and monitored from the machine control room . Cooling areas from plus 6 degrees Celsius to minus 21 degrees Celsius could be provided.

The crew was accommodated in air-conditioned single chambers. The main engine was a slow-running two-stroke diesel engine of the type MAN 6 KSZ 78/155 A with an output of 13,800 hp, which acted directly on the fixed pitch propeller . There was no bow thruster available to support the berthing and casting off maneuvers.
