Columns is an American grindcore band from Charlotte , North Carolina that was formed in 2003.

history

The band was initially founded as an instrumental band in 2003 and consisted of the drummer Jason Skipper, the bassist Jake Wade and the guitarist Jake Troth. Adam Cody of Glass Casket and Wretched finally joined the band in 2004 . In 2006 a self-titled EP was released before Jake Troth left the band to go to school. After a short break from the band, John Stone was added as a replacement. After an EP with five songs was recorded in 2008, Stone left the band in 2009. At appearances in the following year Sam Fleming was present as a substitute. In 2010 the group recorded another EP called Just Another Species , whereupon drummer Jason Skipper also took over the electric guitar. In addition, Michael Lehmann from the band Mantelale can be heard as guest guitarist . Lehmann joined the band in 2011 as a permanent guitarist. This was followed by appearances as opening act for Morbid Angel , Exhumed and Goatwhore . In June 2013, Columns signed a contract with Relapse Records . The debut album Please Explode was released in 2014 . The songs that can be heard on it were already included on the EPs that were already released, but were remixed and mastered.

style

According to Simon Dümpelmann from Rock Hard , the band plays varied Grindcore on Please Explode , with influences from Thrash Metal , Punk and Sludge . Columns are influenced by bands like Pennywise , No Use for a Name , Lagwagon , Pantera , Napalm Death , Carcass and Pig Destroyer . Adam Cody stated in an interview with Dümpelmann that the band is more left-wing. The songs would be about "dirty, nasty swamp creatures" as well as about stockbroker millionaires. Otherwise, the songs would be "about the current state of humanity, mental illness, politics, God, addictions and drugs, and all kinds of things that make [Cody] angry." Women are also addressed. Dümpelmann wrote an issue in his review of the album that it contained a mixture of Sludge, Noise Rock , Mathcore , Grindcore in the style of Pig Destroyer and American Death Metal . In addition, they occasionally process riffs that have been borrowed from Southern Rock . The song No One's Fucking Waiting is reminiscent of Soilent Green . The band is comparable to other groups such as Cloud Rat , Dephosphorus , Human Cull , Keitzer , Svffer and 100,000 tons of Kruppstahl .
