Commandos 2: Men of Courage ( English "Men with bravery") is a real-time tactic - computer game . The game is the official sequel to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and the second part of the Commandos game series . It was released for Windows in September 2001 , followed by ports to the Xbox and PlayStation 2 game consoles in 2002 .

action

The plot can be compared with that of the predecessor. During the Second World War, a small Allied unit operated behind enemy lines. Through targeted operations, the enemy, primarily the German Reich , should be given pinpricks in order to decide the war for the Allies.

Gameplay

The player controls his commando squad in real time , just like in the previous part . The aim is to switch off the opponent as silently as possible or to sneak past him. The mission objectives are, for example, the destruction of certain objects or rescuing people from war zones.

The playing field is viewed from a bird's eye view, whereby the view can be rotated in four stages. The commandos are at the beginning of each mission at a fixed point. The opposing soldiers are on patrol or stand in a permanent position. An enemy's field of vision can be displayed; it is divided into a close area, in which the player will definitely be seen, and a distant area, in which the commandos can crawl around without being spotted.

Commandos 2 offers ten main missions. Compared to its predecessor, this is only half, but some of the missions are much more extensive. In addition to the ten main missions, there are two tutorials and nine bonus levels. Furthermore, different levels of difficulty are available to the player.

The Commandos squad consists of eight specialists in this game. In addition to the already known Green Beret , Sniper , Marine , Pioneer , Driver and the Spy , there is also a thief and a Soviet spy. The player has only one prescribed selection of characters available per mission.

Multiplayer mode

Commandos 2: Men of Courage has a multiplayer mode that allows players to tackle the familiar missions together. However, two PCs are required for this multiplayer mode.

Trivia

Various missions in the game are based on well-known feature films . For example, in the mission The Bridge on the Kwai, there are clear parallels to the film of the same name with Sir Alec Guinness in the lead role. Also, the Mission reminds the soldier James Smith of the movie Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg .

Commandos 2: Men of Courage , like its predecessor, was positively received by game magazines. However, there were clear points of criticism with the control. In 2001, in the October issue of GameStar , Martin Deppe felt that he was “aimlessly in enemy territory” . He criticized u. a. the moderate mission descriptions: “As soon as I reach my comrades, this job will be marked as done. Nobody tells me that I have to bring the boys on board. ” He also disliked the “ unintelligent mouse pointer. ”

His colleague Gunnar Lott could overlook the weaknesses in the controls. For him, “the fantastic graphics more than make up for the control tastes.” Lott summed up that “well thought-out missions, cool heroes' tricks and many innovations” make Commandos 2 a clear reference in the real-time tactics genre.
