biography

Connor Wilson was born in Johannesburg and started skiing in the United States at the age of five . In high school he was the captain of the ice hockey team and a successful show jumper . It was only when his horse became sick that he concentrated on skiing. Before graduating from high school, he spent some time at the Carrabassett Valley Academy, a ski school in Maine , training at Sugarloaf Mountain. The trained rescue diver and helicopter pilot studies veterinary medicine at the University of Vermont and does his training sessions at Mount Mansfield . During stays in his home country he is looked after by the Swiss Cédric Maret and trains in the Drakensberg .

When he was 16, Wilson competed in his first FIS races in the USA . After several other FIS and junior races, he won the South African slalom championship for the first time in July 2016 in Tiffindell . In February 2017 he represented South Africa at the World Championships in St. Moritz , where he finished 54th and 71st in giant slalom and slalom. In the summer he defended his national title in slalom in Tiffindell. Although he only finished 26th in the race, just under ten seconds behind, he managed to clearly distance himself from the domestic competition.

Connor Wilson qualified as one of two ski racers in his country for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . Due to the better placement in the world rankings, he was preferred to his competitor Sive Speelman and was allowed to lead the South African delegation as the flag bearer to the opening as the only active participant . In both giant slalom and slalom he was eliminated in the first round.
