Constantinus L'Empereur van Oppyck

Constantinus L'Empereur van Oppyck also: van Opwijck (* June 1591 in Bremen , † July 1, 1648 in Leiden ) was a German Reformed theologian , philologist and orientalist .

Life

Constantine was born as the son of Antonius Caesar, who came from Brabant and was expelled from there, and who was also called Imperator. Nothing is known about his first educational path. In 1607 he enrolled at the University of Leiden to undertake a basic philosophical study of literature. To complete theological studies, he went on April 8, 1614 to Johannes Drusius at the University of Franeker . There he received his doctorate in theology on March 24, 1617, and on October 7, 1619, he took over a chair in theology and Hebrew at the Illustre grammar school in Harderwijk . He lectured on dogmatics and wrote a Systema theologicum in 1626 .

On February 9, 1627 he became professor of Hebrew and Chaldean at the University of Leiden . In 1628 he had a Grammatica chaldaea et syra published , which was supposed to be used for teaching purposes. He had also studied the rabbis' writings and developed a keen interest in Arabic and other oriental languages. His student Johann Heinrich Hottinger gave him the Pentateuch edition of Richard Kilby (1561? -1620) and a copy of the Samaritan Chronicle, of which his teaching benefited. In his capacity as a Leiden university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1638/39 .

The governor of Brazil Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen appointed him to his council in 1639, which caused him to interrupt his literary work for a while. In 1641, however, he appeared with a review of the De republica Hebraeorum written by Bonaventura Cornelius Bertramus , received the chair of theology in Leiden on December 10, 1646 and in 1648 re- edited his writings, which had already been published in Harderwijk. He also appeared as editor of the Lexicon Chaldaicum, Talmudicum Et Rabbinicum by Johann Buxtorf the Younger .

Empereur married Weintgen de Witt from Amsterdam on May 19, 1622 in Amsterdam.
