Type extinct stratovolcano

The Corazón ( Spanish for heart ) is a 4790  m high, easy to climb, no longer active, eroded stratovolcano in Ecuador , which is located about 30 km southwest of Quito on the western slope of the Andes on the western cordillera . It is located directly north of the two peaks of the Illinois , the southern Iliniza Sur and the northern Iliniza Norte .

Acclimatization Mountain

The Corazón is a frequently visited acclimatization volcano for mountaineers who have greater challenges, such as For example , plan to climb the two highest mountains in the country, the Cotopaxi (5897 meters) and the Chimborazo (6267 meters). However, strong winds and frequent cloud cover must be expected. For first hikes for acclimatization, the pre-summit of the Corazón at an altitude of about 4500 meters or lower volcanoes such as the Pasochoa (4200 meters) are more suitable .

Surname

The Corazón volcano (also El Corazón - The Heart ) got its name from the fact that two sides of its summit form a heart when viewed from a distance from the northwest.

Ascent

The Corazón can be reached quickly from Quito . If you set off very early in an off-road vehicle, it is even possible as a day tour. There are two routes, one starts above the village of Aloag , the other leads via El Chaupi . Depending on the starting point, you need about 6 hours for the ascent to the summit and 3 - 4 hours for the descent for the approx. 1000 meters in altitude. Initially the hike leads through pastures and farmland, but soon the path becomes increasingly rocky. However, there are only short, easy rocky passages to be overcome. A rope is not required.

particularities

Even if some visitors can attest the Corazón volcano only a slight resemblance to the typical heart shape, the striking shape of this single, dark boulder immediately catches the eye from all higher points in the vicinity. Glaciers or firn cover are completely absent on the Corazón, every now and then a light layer of snow covers the upper parts of the mountains, usually it is a pure rock climb. From the summit there is a wonderful view of the cone-shaped, ice-covered "picture book volcano" Cotopaxi . The double summit of the Illinois is even closer , also an ice volcano with a height of over 5000 meters. On the northeastern slopes of the Corazón, ruins from before the Conquista have been found , but they are heavily overgrown and not fully explored.
