Localization of Vienna in Austria

The Habsburgwarte is located on the 542  m high Hermannskogel in Vienna . It is 27 meters high and has the shape of a medieval defense tower .

The construction

The neo-Romanesque-neo-Gothic building, built by the architect Franz von Neumann junior, consists of a sixteen meter high round tower and an eleven meter high pointed tower on top. On the viewing platform of the round tower, 16.7 meters above the highest point of the Hermannskogel, is the fundamental point of the Austrian land survey , which was determined in 1892 by the Imperial and Royal Military Geographic Institute . The former loggia on the first floor is no longer preserved. The Habsburgwarte is still operated by the ÖTK as a lookout point and is open to the public on weekends from spring to late autumn (approx. April to November) for a small entrance fee. There are also appointments at other times for registered groups.

history

In the 19th century, the Klosterneuburg monastery , which owns the Hermannskogel, tried to build a lookout tower on its summit, but did not receive a permit. From 1877 the Austrian Tourist Club looked after a wooden observation frame at this point. On March 15, 1883, the ÖTK decided to build a stone building. On June 23, 1884, Emperor Franz Joseph I approved the name Habsburg-Warte for the building, and on November 18, 1887, the building permit was granted. The Austrian Tourist Club donated the Habsburgwarte on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1888).

The Imperial and Royal Military Geography Institute should use the tower as a fundamental point (main triangulation point). In 1888 the tower was built according to the plans of the architect Franz von Neumann jun. Erected in Romanesque-Gothic mixed forms. The keystone was set on November 19, 1888, the name day of Empress Elisabeth. After the completion of the interior, the Habsburgwarte was opened and inaugurated on October 6, 1889 in the presence of Archduke Karl Ludwig (brother of Emperor Franz Joseph and protector of the ÖTK) and Prelate Ubald Kostersitz of Klosterneuburg Monastery. In 1892 it was officially used as the main point of the Austrian triangulation network. In 1938 the National Socialists forced the renaming to "Hermannskogelwarte".

In 1945 the pillared loggia on the first floor was destroyed by artillery fire. In 1947 the restoration was carried out with the help of NIOGAS (today EVN ), which has been using the tower as a radio relay station and remote measuring point since 1960. With a decision dated September 13, 1972, the Federal Monuments Office placed the Habsburg lookout under monument protection. On October 8, 1974, the ÖTK decided to use the historical name Habsburgwarte again.
