Cordisepalum is a two species comprehensive plant genus in the wind family(Convolvulaceae).

description

Cordisepalum species are lianas , the lower stem axes of which are lignified and bare, while the upper branches remain herbaceous, pale yellow-red or rust-brown in color and have velvety hairs. The leaves stand on slender, rounded and slightly pillow-shaped petioles , the leaf blades are ovate-heart-shaped, with entire margins and paper-like. The veins are foot-shaped, the veins clearly protrude on the underside.

In the axillary inflorescences , the many flowers are arranged in racemes , umbel-rispig or as thyrsenic . First, the flowers bloom at the base of the inflorescence. The bracts are like leaves , they resemble the leaves in texture, hairiness and veining. The bracts are scale-like and stand directly below the calyx . The hermaphrodite, radial symmetry , small flowers are five-fold. The five sepals stand free from each other, overlap like roof tiles and encompass the base of the corolla tube. The crown is wheel-shaped, has only a short corolla tube. The coronet is five-lobed or five-lobed, in the latter case the division can reach below the center of the coronet. As the flower ages, the corolla lobes bend back. The five stamens are the same length and are slightly above the crown. The lower half of the stamens is fused with the crown, above it the stamens are free and thread-like. The anthers are elongated and open lengthways. The pollen grains are three-fold (trikolpat) and have no tips. The stamp does not protrude beyond the crown. The Upper constant ovary is upright, he is einblättrig, hairy and contains four or five ovules . The stylus is simple or absent entirely. The scar is roughly wrinkled and consists of two spherical lobes, the individual lobes are slightly longer than wide.

The calyx enlarges on the fruit, especially the three outer sepals are greatly enlarged, almost circular or broadly ovoid. The base is heart-shaped, the edges are free. The two inner sepals are only slightly enlarged. The fruit is an elliptical or spindle-shaped follicle , at which the perennial style forms a point. The fruit contains only one seed , this is elliptical, smooth and hairless, the hilum is basal and circular.
