Cornelius Schnauber

Cornelius Schnauber (born April 18, 1939 in Freital ; † February 21, 2014 in Los Angeles ) was professor of German literary history, rhetoric, expression, opera and film at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles and a German writer.

After studying German literature, phonetics and political science and obtaining his doctorate in Hamburg in 1965 , he moved to the USA in 1966 and was initially a professor at the University of North Dakota , and two years later he became professor of German literary history at the USC. Here he founded the Max Kade Institute for Austrian-German-Swiss Studies and heads it as director. Since 1973 Schnauber has organized international events, seminars and “workshops” with prominent writers, politicians, musicians, film artists from German-speaking countries and the USA in Los Angeles.

Since 1992 he has also worked as a German Diction Coach at the Los Angeles Opera under General Director Plácido Domingo . Five years later he processed this experience as the author of a book about Domingo. Schnauber was the editor and commentator of Fritz Lang's and Billy Wilder's film texts and the author of scientific articles and essays on literature and prosody , music theory, the Nazi era, concrete art, poetry, authors in exile and film artists in Hollywood as well as contemporary literature in Switzerland and Austria. He worked for several years as an employee of Deutsche Welle and Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and as a consultant for television stations and film productions, such as the feature film Hitler - Rise of Evil .

Since 1999 Schnauber has organized exhibitions as well as artistic and academic events in Dresden in order to deepen the relationship between Saxony and Los Angeles and was the liaison between the Shoah Foundation and the Saxon state government for several years . He was co-founder and co-chairman of the German-Jewish Dialogue in Los Angeles.

Schnauber was, among other things, a member of the PEN center for German-speaking authors abroad .
