Cosey Fanni Tutti , real name Christine Carol Newby (born November 4, 1951 in Kingston upon Hull , Yorkshire , England ) is an artist and musician.

Life

She chose her stage name freely after Mozart's opera Così fan tutte . Around 1969 she founded the art project COUM Transmissions together with Genesis P-Orridge and triggered a real scandal with the prostitution art campaign at the ICA ( Institute of Contemporary Arts ) in London in 1976: the provocative exhibition showed erotic images, among other things, tampons and pornographic material and met with rejection from conservative Britons and women's rights activists. Cosey Fanni Tutti has also appeared in several pornographic films, including director Lasse Braun .

Meanwhile the time of the punk and alternative movement had dawned. In 1976, together with Genesis P-Orridge, Chris Carter and Peter Christopherson , Cosey founded the experimental music and performance group Throbbing Gristle (TG). One of the first successful alternative record labels developed from the radical project: Industrial Records (IR) and gave the name to an entire musical genre: Industrial Music. The group moved their concert recordings, studio recordings and video tapes in personal union and gave suggestions for many subsequent bands. After her start as lead guitarist with Throbbing Gristle, which split up after a last concert on May 29, 1981 in San Francisco, Cosey appeared together with Chris Carter (now also a couple in private) as the synthpop duo Chris & Cosey (later Carter Tutti ).

In addition to musical projects, Cosey Fanni Tutti gained a reputation as an artist with numerous international exhibitions, but her connection to Throbbing Gristle has remained: In 2004, after 23 years, there was a surprising reunion of the four original members.
