Costus laevis is a species ofthe Costaceae family . It is found from southern Central America to northern South America.

features

Costus laevis is an herbaceous plant and reaches a height of up to 6 meters. The hairless, narrowly elliptical to narrowly obovate leaves are elongated and pointed.

The cone-like, broadly cylindrical inflorescences are 5 to 10 centimeters long and 3 to 7 centimeters in diameter, during maturity they reach a length of up to 25 centimeters and a width of up to 9 centimeters. The bracts are green, occasionally red. The crown is yellowish to reddish-white, the fully expanded labellum is broadly obovate and striped with purple to yellow. The seeds have a white aril .

distribution

Costus laevis is native from Mexico to Bolivia, it inhabits open areas, the banks of alluvial forests and swamps.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1798 by Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón y Jiménez .
