The Scheldtegroppe ( Cottus perifretum ) is a small, only ten centimeters long freshwater fish . It occurs in Great Britain , in the French and Belgian Scheldt , in the Rhine south to Karlsruhe , in the Moselle , in the Sieg , in the lower Loire and the lower Garonne .

features

Cottus perifretum becomes ten centimeters long. Cottus perifretum differs from other Cottus species in north-western Europe in that it lacks a transverse ligament in the pelvic fins and extends the body spines down to the caudal fin stalk in juveniles and most adults . However, it is sometimes absent in large males. The eye diameter is 18 to 21% of the head length. The dorsal fin is black or marbled in males ready to mate. The anal fin is supported by 11 to 13 rays . Its last fin ray is connected to the body by a membrane over almost its entire length.

Way of life

Cottus perifretum inhabits all types of flowing and stony waters, including large rivers. The scheldtegroppe feeds on small, bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
