Cowboy Troy (born December 18, 1970 in Victoria , Texas ; actually Troy Coleman ) is an American country rapper.

biography

As early as 1993 Troy Coleman met the country musician John Rich, who was a member of Texasee and later Lonestar . The two had common musical interests beyond country and became friends. Coleman was the store manager of a shoe chain until 1999, when he took time out to try his hand at music in Nashville . He worked as a country rapper and combined his musical role models from country ( Charlie Daniels , Oak Ridge Boys ) with rock ( Kiss , ZZ Top ) and hip-hop ( Run-DMC , Sir Mix-a-Lot ). For his kind of country rap he coined the term hick-hop .

When he came to Nashville, John Rich had just left Lonestar and founded the Muzik Mafia with Big Kenny for regular live performances, and Cowboy Troy was also one of the live musicians. His first recordings - the EP Hick-Hop Hysteria and the album Beginner's Luck - he released on his own in 2001 and 2002 respectively. After that he was supported more intensively by Big & Rich . He was a guest on their bestseller album Horse of a Different Color in 2004 and appeared with them at the CMA Awards, where he was only the second black country singer on the CMA stage after Charley Pride . He got a record deal with Warner Music and worked directly with Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson on the songs Our America and I Play Chicken with the Train , both of which hit the country charts .

The duo also participated as a producer team on their first label album Loco Motive , which was released in 2005. It reached number 2 on the country charts and number 15 on the official Billboard 200 . It was also able to place in the rap charts. The second Warner album Black in the Saddle was released in 2007. It was much more serious and could not meet the expectations after the first album. He then released his next album Demolition Mission on an indie label and completely missed the charts.

In addition to his own music, he co-hosted the country music talent show Nashville Star for two years in the 2000s . By the end of the decade, however, his career seemed to have stalled. Only in 2014 did he make another attempt with Warner. The album King of Clubs only made it into the rap charts. He then released other albums on his own label, Hick Hop Federation , but did not return to the charts.
