Crenicichla gillmorlisi is aspecies of fish from the cichlid family that occurs inthe catchment area of the Río Acaray in Paraguay. It bears its scientific species name in honor of the ichthyologist Walter A. Gill Morlis.

description

Crenicichla gillmorlisi has an elongated body and reaches a length of about 18 cm. The species can be distinguished from all other pike cichlids by its color. Young fish show a series of vertically aligned stripes on the sides of their bodies, which in older specimens dissolve into small dark spots. This does not happen with Crenicichla mandelburgeri , a species that is otherwise very similar to Crenicichla gillmorlisi . A spot on the shoulder is missing in Crenicichla gillmorlisi . The sideline is not accompanied by a black row of dots. The body of the fish is covered with comb scales. Round scales can only be found on the cheeks and in front of the dorsal fin. The lower jaw protrudes. The edge of the preoperculum is sawn. The supracleithrum, a bone in the shoulder girdle, is smooth. The eye ring bones 3 and 4 are separated from each other. The upper lip and nostrils are clearly separated from each other. The teeth of the outer row of teeth are movable.

habitat

The specimens examined for the initial description were caught in small rivers with rapidly flowing water of brownish color. The rivers are about 4 meters wide and 1 to 1.5 meters deep. The ground consists of sand, stones and rocks. The fish stayed close to the shore under overhangs. Accompanying the fish cichlids were Crenicichla lepidota and Gymnogeophagus setequedas that tetras Bryconamericus stramineus , Leporinus lacustris , Mimagoniates microlepis , Pyrrhulina australis , stone roof Erina brevipinnis and Astyanax sp., Characidium sp., Cheirodon sp., Hemigrammus sp. and Hoplias sp., the catfish Corydoras diphyes , Hypostomus dlouhyi and Hypoptopoma sp., the green knifefish ( Eigenmannia virescens ) and the tooth carp Phallotorynus victoriae . The surrounding landscape is made up of grass and small trees.
