Career

The then thirteen year old Cristina Iloc started athletics in her hometown of Zalau. From 1990 to 1995 she trained with CCȘ Zalău and then until autumn 1998 under Teodor Bidean with Armătura Zalău . She has been working for CSM Suceava since autumn 1998 and was also briefly active in 2004 and 2005 for Steaua Bucharest .

Her first international success was winning the bronze medal in the 5000 meter run at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Beijing in 1996. She also took third place over this distance in 1999 at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca. At the student world championships in Jena in 2000, she was third in the cross country .

Then she concentrated on the obstacle course. Her breakthrough in what was then still a young discipline for women came on August 7, 2000 when she set a world record in the obstacle course in Bucharest with a time of 9: 43.64 minutes and undercut the old mark of Russian Jelena Motalova by more than five seconds . Only about three weeks later Casandra improved her own world record in Reims to 9: 40.20 minutes. Less than a year later, she lost her record to Justyna Bąk from Poland .

At the Universiade 2003 in Daegu Casandra won another bronze medal in the 5000 meter run. In obstacle course she finished seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and tenth place at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. At the World Athletics Championships 2007 in Osaka she was sixth and in the same year third at the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart. In 2008 in Beijing , Casandra first took part in the Olympic Games. There she was able to set her personal best with 9: 16.85 minutes and thus took fifth place in the obstacle course, which was later corrected to fourth place after the doping ban of a Russian athlete. At the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 , however, she was eliminated in advance.

Casandra is a three-time Romanian obstacle course champion (2003, 2007 and 2009). In 2008 she was runner-up behind Ancuța Bobocel .
