The Sieber Crocus ( Crocus sieberi ), also Greek dwarf Crocus called, is a plant from the genus of crocus ( Crocus ).

features

The Sieber crocus is a spring-green, perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 4 to 10 centimeters. The 2 to 8 leaves are 2 to 6 millimeters (rarely from 1 millimeter) wide. There are 2 bracts . The perigone lobes measure 15 to 40 × 7 to 16 millimeters and are lilac-blue to white in color and usually not veined with dark veins on the outside, they have at most a central stripe in purple. Usually the throat is bald. The branches of the stylus are expanded, orange and curly.

The flowering period extends from January to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The Sieber crocus occurs in southern Albania, southern Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Crete. The species grows on mountain pastures, rocky slopes, open forests and patches of snow .

Systematics

Several subspecies are distinguished from Crocus sieberi , including:

  • Crocus sieberi J. Gay subsp. sieberi : The plant reaches heights of 4 to 8 centimeters. The shell of the tuber consists of fine mesh fibers. The leaves are up to 2 millimeters wide. The flowers are white on the inside and white or purple on the outside, they can also be banded or tinted purple. The throat is yellow and bald. The anthers and pollen are yellow. The capsule is 20 to 25 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from March to May (rarely until June). Crocus sieberi subsp. sieberi is on Crete in the prefectures of Chania, Rethymno and Iraklion endemic . This subspecies grows on rocky slopes, in bushes, on pasture lawns and on snow floors at altitudes of 1300 to 2400 meters.
  • Crocus sieberi subsp. atticus ( Boiss. & Orph.) B.Mathew : The flowers are lilac blue. The flowering period extends from January to February. This subspecies occurs in south-east Greece at altitudes of 400 to 1350 meters. This subspecies is considered by some authors as an independent species and must then be Crocus atticus (Boiss. & Orph.) Orph. be called.
  • Crocus sieberi subsp. sublimis (Herb.) B.Mathew : The flowers are bluish purple, around the hairy yellow throat there is a white zone. The flowering period extends from March to April. This subspecies occurs in Greece and southern Albania. It grows on alpine lawns on melting snow at altitudes of 1500 to 2600 meters. This subspecies is considered by some authors as an independent species and must then be Crocus nivalis Bory & Chaub. be called.

use

The Sieber crocus is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens, lawns and borders. The species has been in culture since 1841 at the latest.
