Some businessmen then decided to equip the now economically developing city with a more significant name and called him in honor of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland 1926 Cumberland . The names of the Cumberland River, the Cumberland Falls , the Cumberland Mountains and the Cumberland Gap also go back to the Duke of Cumberland. The extraction of coal was up to the Great Depression of the relevant industry. However, when their demand fell, the number of inhabitants also fell again. The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum , east of the city , has sections on the history of the coal boom.
