Cumberland is a city with the status of City of Harlan County in the US -amerikanischen State Kentucky with 2,171 inhabitants (2012).

Cumberland is about 190 kilometers southeast of Lexington . The connecting road US Highway 119 runs through the southern counties of Cumberland. The Cumberland River runs through the city. The state of Virginia begins in the east at a distance of 10 kilometers .
history
First settlers settled in a relatively lean (Engl. Poor ) area at the fork (Engl. Fork ) a river down and called the place Poor Fork . Because of the coal richness of the area, the place began to grow. Some businessmen then decided to equip the now economically developing city with a more significant name and called him in honor of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland 1926 Cumberland . The names of the Cumberland River, the Cumberland Falls , the Cumberland Mountains and the Cumberland Gap also go back to the Duke of Cumberland. The extraction of coal was up to the Great Depression of the relevant industry. However, when their demand fell, the number of inhabitants also fell again. The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum , east of the city , has sections on the history of the coal boom.
