Cupressus chengiana is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to central China.

description

Cupressus chengiana grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 30 meters and diameters of up to 1 meter at breast height . The densely packed, pencil-shaped twigs are 1.2 to 2 millimeters thick. They walk straight, ascending or descending, but never hanging from the branches.

The scale-like and curved leaves are 1 to 1.5 millimeters in size and are dull green in color. The leaf tips are blunt. On the underside of the leaf there is a noticeable, often darker-colored gland in the center.

The male cones are 2 to 4 millimeters in size and contain twelve to 16 microsporophylls . The cones are spherical or oblong-egg-shaped with a diameter of around 1.2 to 2 centimeters. As they ripen, they are brown or reddish brown in color. They consist of eight to 14 cone scales, each of which carries several seeds. The flat seeds are 3 to 5 millimeters long and 2 to 4 millimeters wide and triangular to ovate.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cupressus chengiana is in China. You can find them there in southern Gansu and in northern and western Sichuan .

Cupressus chengiana thrives at altitudes of 800 to 2900 meters. It grows there mainly on mountain slopes and in mountain valleys.

Systematics

It was first described as Cupressus chengiana in 1964 by Shiu Ying Hu in Taiwania 10, p. 57 . A synonym for Cupressus chengiana S.Y. Hu is Chamaecyparis chengiana (SY Hu) Gaussen .

The species is divided into two subspecies. Some of these are also viewed as varieties :

  • Cupressus chengiana subsp. chengiana (Syn .: cupressus chengiana subsp. kansouensis (Silba) Silba ) is the nominal form. Your cones consist of eight to ten cone scales. It can be found in the entire distribution area.
  • Cupressus chengiana subsp. jiangeensis ( N. Zhao ) Silba . Your cones consist of ten to 14 cone scales. There is only one known tree of this subspecies in Sichuan.

Hazard and protection

Cupressus chengiana is listed as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List . The main reason given is overexploitation and the associated encroachment of the forests. The subspecies jiangeensis is listed as "critically endangered" because its population only consists of a single tree. In both entries, however, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
