Cupressus goveniana , the California Cypress ( cupressus goveniana , Syn .: Hesperocyparis goveniana (Gordon) Bartel ) is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to western California.

description

Cones

Cupressus goveniana grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow to heights of 10 meters, in exceptional cases even up to 50 meters. The dense to barren crown is spherical to columnar in shape. The fibrous bark has a smooth or rough surface and is irregularly furrowed. The branches, which are 1 to 1.5 millimeters thick, are opposite to each other on the branches.

The leaves are shaped like scales. There is sometimes an embedded gland on the underside of the leaf that does not produce resin .

The male cones are 3 to 4 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters thick. They contain three to six pollen sacs . The cones are spherical in shape with a diameter of 1 to 3 centimeters. When ripe, they are grayish brown in color. Each cone consists of three to five pairs of scales. The dark brown to pitch black seeds sometimes have a blue-green tint and are 3 to 5 millimeters in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cupressus goveniana is in western California. You can find them there on the northern coast, in the Santa Cruz Mountains and on the Monterey Peninsula . The entire stand consists of around 15 separate sub-populations, none of which contain more than 250 trees.

Cupressus goveniana thrives at altitudes of 60 to 800 meters. It grows mainly in coastal pine forests on poor soils .

Systematics

It was first described as Cupressus goveniana in 1849 by George Gordon in Journal of the Horticultural Society of London 4, p. 295 . Some authors call the species a synonym for Callitropsis goveniana (Gordon) DP Little , for Neocupressus goveniana (Gordon) de Laub. or viewed for Hesperocyparis goveniana (Gordon) Bartel .

The species is divided into up to three varieties , depending on the author . These are sometimes also viewed as subspecies or species:

  • Cupressus goveniana var. Abramsiana (Gordon) DP Little . This variety is found in the Santa Cruz Mountains . A synonym is Cupressus abramsiana C. B. Wolf or Hesperocyparis abramsiana (CBWolf) Bartel .
  • Cupressus goveniana var. Goveniana . This variety is native to Monterey County as well as the Mendocino County coast .
  • Cupressus goveniana var. Pygmaea Lemmon . This variety occurs in Mendocino County as well as on the northwest coast of Sonoma County . A synonym is Cupressus pygmaea (Lemmon) coffin. or Hesperocyparis pygmaea (Lemmon) Bartel .

Hazard and protection

Cupressus goveniana is listed as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List . The abramsiana variety is listed as " critically endangered". Local pressure from settlement construction and agriculture as well as forest fires and competitive pressure from introduced species are cited as the main risk factors. In both entries, however, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
