Curt Sprehn

Curt Erich Willy Sprehn (born August 30, 1892 in Preußisch Stargard , † June 4, 1976 in Celle ) was a German veterinarian and professor at the University of Leipzig .

Life

After graduating from high school in Danzig , Sprehn studied veterinary medicine and natural sciences at the University of Berlin and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Berlin from 1912 to 1921 . From 1916 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. From 1921 to 1924 he worked as a practical veterinarian in Berlin. In 1923 he received his doctorate as Dr. med. vet. at TiHo Berlin. From 1924 to 1925 he was assistant at the Pathological Institute of the TiHo Berlin and from 1925 to 1926 head of the department for parasitology at Merck in Darmstadt . From 1927 he became an assistant to August Eber at the Animal Disease Institute at Leipzig University . In 1928 he completed his habilitation there in applied zoology and parasitology and taught from 1928 to 1932 as a private lecturer, from 1932 to 1938 as a non-scheduled associate professor and from 1938 as a scheduled associate professor for parasitology and applied zoology (department head parasite science and fish diseases ). A longer stay as a parasitologist from 1934 to 1938 led to Ankara in Turkey. During the Second World War, the Institute for Parasitology Leipzig was closed and Sprehn was used, among other things, in combating mange . In November 1933, Sprehn signed the German professors' commitment to Adolf Hitler . In 1945 the NSDAP member was dismissed and his university career was over.

From 1945 Sprehn worked as a practical veterinarian in West Germany. From 1951 to 1955 he was a senior councilor and head of department for fur diseases at the Federal Research Center for Agriculture in Celle. Sprehn was a specialist in parasites: he introduced carbon tetrachloride and tetrachlorethylene in the treatment of liver fluke disease . He also researched the rearing diseases of the silver foxes (use of "Sprehn capsules").
