Vegetative characteristics

The curly-leaved cyclamen grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and with its inflorescence stems reaches heights of growth of 10 to 20 centimeters. As a persistence organ, they form a spherical, flattened tuber with a diameter of about 3.5 centimeters, which is only rooted on its underside.

The basal foliage leaves are already present during the flowering period and are divided into petioles and leaf blades. The simple leaf blade is heart-shaped with a length and width of up to 16 centimeters, pointed, toothed to curved on the edge. The top is usually marbled dark green and silver gray and the bottom is light gray green.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to May. The nodding flowers stand individually on a 10 to 20 centimeter long inflorescence stem. The hermaphroditic flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five purple-colored petals are fused. The five corolla lobes are 15 to 25 millimeters long and are turned back.

After fertilization , the flower / fruit stalk is screwed up from the tip and pushes the capsule fruit into the ground. The capsule fruits open underground (this is the case with most cyclamen species). Each capsule fruit contains many seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.
