The Cycle Savages (alternative title: In the intoxication of violence and rockers know no mercy ) is an American action film directed by Bill Brame . The exploitation film, released in 1969, tried to swim along the rocker film wave after the success of Easy Rider , but is strictly speaking not a real biker film.

action

Keeg and his rocker gang, a gang of anti-social criminals, rule the drug market and prostitution in a small town. In their sights the artist Romko, who made compromising drawings of the gang. Keeg beats him to hospital and gives him a cut on his stomach. They unload the artist from Lea, an ex-girlfriend of Keeg, and hire a quack to take care of his wound. Then they ravage his apartment. But it turns out differently than the gang planned: Romko and Lea fall in love.

When Romko returns to his apartment, he notices that his sword, a reminder of his mission in Normandy , is missing. He goes to the gang's clubhouse to confront Keeg. But there are only two gang members that he can easily defeat. He returns home with his sword and meets Leah. The two spend the night together while Keeg and his gang rape a young woman. Suddenly, however, there is a knock at Lea's door. The police arrested the couple for alleged violations of morality, but actually only because Romko refuses to cooperate.

The next day, Keeg and his gang grab Romko, who was able to post the bail, and take him to the clubhouse, where they try to crush his hands with a screw clamp . At the last minute, however, Lea comes and saves her boyfriend. When the police also enter the scene, Keeg runs away, but is killed in an exchange of fire by one of his ex-girlfriends.

background

Cycle Savages tries to ride along with the setting, title design and trailer on the rocker film that became popular after the success of Easy Rider . Indeed, there are some parallels to the rocker subculture between Keeg and his gang, but the characters shown in the film are more "a 'normal' gang of criminals who happen to get around on motorbikes," as one review put it.

The film was produced by Casey Kasem , a well-known American DJ , and Mike Curb . Kasem also appears in the film as Keeg's brother and head of the prostitution ring.

The film was released in Germany in 2008 as part of the Rocker and Biker Box Vol. 1 by MIG / EuroVideo as a double DVD together with The Death Race of the Wild Angels , Hell's Angels '70 and Run, Angel, Run .

criticism

The film was re-examined, especially after its re-release in 2008, as part of the reviews of the rocker and biker box and accordingly compared with the other three films. Cycle Savages is considered the worst film in the box, which mainly suffers from its somewhat difficult dialogues and the strange story. Bruce Dern's portrayal of a crazy and sadistic leader was praised .

"Stereotypical biker film, worth mentioning at most because of Bruce Dern's portrayal of the sadistic top rocker."

"The whole quark is worth it for a few passable brawls and Bruce Dern's portrayal of the crazy gangleader who improvises, drags around and rolls his eyes a lot."
