Cyril Dean Darlington

Cyril Dean Darlington (born December 19, 1903 in Chorley ( Lancashire ), † March 26, 1981 in Oxford ) was an English botanist and geneticist. He discovered the crossover of chromosomes and recognized its importance for evolution. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ CDDarl. ".

Live and act

In 1946 Darlington became President of the Royal Genetic Society . From 1953 he was a professor at Oxford University and director of the botanical garden there.

Darlington wrote important papers on cytology, genetics and evolution, in which he examined the importance of chromosomes for evolution and the interplay between mutation and selection .

In 1940 he was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which in 1946 awarded him the Royal Medal . In 1951 he became a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.
