The D'Iberville was a French Aviso and type ship of the D'Iberville class , which included three ships. The ship, built between 1891 and 1894, was used in the First World War and in 1922 was removed from the French navy's register of ships.

history

The D'Iberville was built by the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire shipyard in Nantes . The keel was laid in August 1891. Two years later, was launched instead. The D'Iberville came into service during 1894. She was also classified as a torpedo cannon boat until 1899 . During the operations, it turned out that the D'Iberville , like her sister ships , tended to roll very strongly .

The Aviso was in the port of Penang on October 28, 1914 , when the Russian cruiser Schemtschug was sunk there by the German cruiser Emden . Since the D'Iberville was anchored behind merchant ships and the boilers were cold, she could not intervene. She later patrolled the Algerian coast until 1917. In 1922 the D'Iberville was decommissioned.

technology

The D'Iberville was 80.0 m long between the perpendiculars and a maximum of 8.08 m wide. With a displacement of 952 t, she was up to 3.45 m deep in the water. As a drive it had eight steam boilers and two compound steam engines with fourfold steam expansion , which together made 5,000 hp and drove two propellers. The maximum speed was 21.5 kn. Up to 115 tons of coal were bunkered as fuel .

The arming of the Avisos consisted of a forwardly disposed gun of the caliber 10.0 cm L / 45 and three placed in the rear area of the vessel caliber cannons 6.5 cm L / 50th In addition, there were six rapid-fire guns caliber 4.7 cm L / 40 and six torpedo tubes with a diameter of 45 cm on board. The torpedo tubes were completely removed during a renovation carried out in 1899.

As an Aviso, the D'Iberville received only light armor. It consisted of a 20 mm thick armored deck , which was reinforced to 40 mm in the area of the engine room. The command tower was also 40 mm thick armored.
