The DSB M X (II) are diesel-electric locomotives that Danske Statsbaner ( German  Danish State Railways ) procured at the beginning of the 1960s to replace steam locomotives on branch lines with a low axle load .

prehistory

DSB was in contact with the General Motors Group (GM) as early as the late 1940s . It was there that the state railroad became aware of the American standard locomotives of the F series from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMC), at that time a subsidiary of GM, which had been built since 1939 .

EMC's concept envisaged the coupling of several of these 108-ton locomotives into a multi-part unit in order to obtain the power required for a specific traction. The variant called A-Units was equipped with a complete driver's cab at only one end. These machines were mainly intended for freight train service. A passenger train variant appeared as the E-series from EMC as early as 1937, which had the wheel arrangement (A1A) '(A1A)' and had two engines with a total of 2000 hp, later up to 2400 hp. In 1941 General Motors took over the EMC and Winton Company and brought both companies into the group as the Electro Motive Division (EMD). At the same time, the new EMD 567 engine was presented, which was intended to drive almost all GM EMD locomotives until 1965.

The name NOHAB AA16 for the European license variant was named after the licensee Nydqvist och Holm AB / NOHAB in Trollhättan , Sweden , who received the license to build EMD diesel locomotives in 1949. This diesel-electric locomotive was procured by many railway administrations in Eastern and Western Europe in variants with the axle sequences Co'Co 'or (A1A) (A1A).

Nohab revised the design, the closer UIC - clearance gauge played an essential role. The roof had to be curved more than with the overseas locomotives to the now lower roof side edge. This had an impact on the position of the side windows, which were then pulled down further. This meant that the outer ends of the cab windshields had to be pulled down a little more, which gave them their distinctive, somewhat trapezoidal appearance. The typical front muzzle was inclined even more than on the American and Australian models in order to better absorb the impact forces of the side buffers common in Europe.

Procurement and technical data

45 locomotives of this type were procured between 1960 and 1962. They were used for both freight and passenger trains. With an axle load of 16 tonnes , they could be used freely as various branch lines were only approved for this lower axle load. All M X (II) locomotives had the facility for multiple control for multiple traction, which worked according to the US standard with 650 volts direct current. The M X 1011 to 1020 received control devices for push-pull trains in suburban traffic in Copenhagen.

Like all Danish locomotives and wagons, the locomotives were kept in a brown color until 1972. Then the color changed to black paint with red contrasting vehicle ends.

The M X (II) has a partially enlarged fan grille on one side and, unlike other NOHAB locomotives, no continuous fan band.

Use and whereabouts

At the DSB, the locomotives were used for all types of trains, in their last years of operation even before light and medium-weight freight trains. This type of locomotive has not been used by the DSB since 1992.

Some of the machines were taken out of service by the DSB and scrapped or given a special use:

  • 1001: since 1988 DSB museum locomotive in the Danish Railway Museum in Odense
  • 1002: retired in 1989, scrapped in 1990
  • 1011: retired and scrapped 1987
  • 1020: scrapped after an accident in 1989
  • 1022: retired and scrapped in 1990
  • 1026: retired and scrapped 1987
  • 1035: 1996 monument locomotive in Struer
  • 1037: 1995 spare parts dispenser for the museum locomotive, remainder scrapped in 1998
  • 1039: retired in 1988, scrapped in 1989
  • 1044: retired in 1988, front parts for OHJ MX 104 used, the rest scrapped

All other locomotives were sold partly operational, partly as spare parts donors. The locomotive continues to be used in freight transport by Danish private railways. Since Railion Danmark A / S withdrew from the area, these companies and their locomotive stocks have been in increasing demand. Swedish rail companies also bought used locomotives.

Remarks

  1. As part of the standardization of the engines of the DSB diesel locomotives and because EMD could no longer supply spare parts for the 567 engines, the locomotives MX 1008-1010, 1016-1020, 1036 and 1042 together with all MY (II) engines were included Bushings and pistons from the EMD 645 E motor series are similar to those installed in the MZ series . The performance of the converted engines was retained, but the speed was increased from 835 / min to 905 / min in order to avoid critical vibrations of the engine. It was planned to rebuild the entire series. Due to their age, only the locomotives mentioned were converted.
