The ladies' tulip ( Tulipa clusiana ) is a species of tulip ( Tulipa ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).

The ladies' tulip grows as a perennial, herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 20 to 25 (5 to 40) centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The inside of the onion shell is soft and frizzy at the base and bristly haired on top, the hair protrudes from the tip. The rarely only two, usually three to five leaves are blue-green in color, sharply folded and measure up to 25 × 1 (to 2) centimeters.

Usually only one, rarely two flowers are funnel-shaped to star-shaped and fragrant. There are two circles, each with three bracts . The outer bracts, which are pink on the underside and white on the upper side, are lanceolate with a length of 4.5 to 6.5 centimeters and a width of 1 to 1.9 centimeters wide. The inner bracts are colored white, 2 to 5 inches long and 0.8 to 1.5 inches wide and elliptical. Both the outer and inner bracts have a small black-purple basal spot. The two × three stamens have hairless black stamens and purple to yellow-brown colored anthers.

The flowering time is in April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48 or 60.

Occurrence

The lady tulip occurs in the northwest Himalayas , Kashmir , Chitral , northern Afghanistan and eastern Iran at altitudes of 800 to 2850 meters. This species was naturalized in south- western Europe , Italy , Greece and western Turkey .

Systematics

The lady tulip is very rich in shape, several varieties have been described:

  • Tulipa clusiana DC. var. clusiana : The upper side of the bracts is white, the inner ones are pointed. The basal spot and the anthers are colored deep purple.
  • Tulipa clusiana var. Chrysantha (ADHall) Sealy : There are 1 to 3 flowers. The bracts are yellow, the underside of the outer ones is usually red or brownish-purple. The anthers are yellow.
  • Tulipa clusiana var. Stellata (Hook.) Rule : The bracts are white, their underside is purple-pink. The basal spot and stamens are yellow.

Tulipa aitchisonii A.D. Hall is now assigned to Tulipa clusiana . It is a high mountain form that occurs in the moister monsoon area , reaches heights of 3 to 15 centimeters and develops up to three flowers.

The ladies' tulip is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens and borders. It has been in culture since 1606 at the latest.
