Dan André Sperber (born June 20, 1942 in Cagnes-sur-Mer ) is a French anthropologist and linguist .

Life

Dan Sperber is the son of the Austrian Manès Sperber , who had to emigrate from Germany in 1933, and Zenija (Jenka) Zivcon from Lithuania . The parents were in 1940 after the occupation of France from Paris to the unoccupied zone dodged and had in 1942 before the German Nazis and their French helpers in Switzerland to escape. Dan Sperber was initially placed in the Girenbad internment camp and then with a pastor in Zurich . Manès Sperber was still married to Mirjam Reiter in 1942, with whom he had their son Vladimir Sperber (* 1934). Shortly after the end of the war, the family returned to France, Manes Sperber and Zivcon were only able to marry in the early 1950s.

Dan Sperber studied anthropology at the Sorbonne and Oxford University . In 1965 he became a research assistant at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), initially in the Laboratoire d'Études Africaines . He later worked in the Laboratoire d'ethnologie et de sociologie comparative , then in the Center de Recherche en Épistémologie Appliquée and finally, from 2001, in the Jean-Nicod Institute . He retired from the CNRS .

Sperber first worked in religious anthropology and carried out ethnographic field studies among the Dorze in Ethiopia . He began his theoretical studies in anthropology as a collaborator with Claude Lévi-Strauss , for whom he worked at the CNRS. He later broke away from Lévi-Strauss with a post-structuralist research approach. With Deirdre Wilson he developed the relevance theory for communicative processes in 1986 .

After the Médaille d'argent du CNRS in 2002, Sperber was the first to receive the newly founded “Prix Claude Levi-Strauss” in 2009, on the grounds that his work dealt in an excellent way with the interactions between the various human sciences. He is a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Dan enjoyed his father's fame, but “in later years it happened more and more often that Manès was asked: Excuse me, are you by any chance the father of the famous researcher Dan Sperber? ". Dan Sperber has two sons, born in 1986 and 2001. Today he lives in his parents' last apartment on Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.

He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 1993 and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2007 .
