Danakilia is a species of fish from the family of the cichlids (Cichlidae)consisting of only two described species. It occurs in two lakes in northeast Africa in the hot and extremely dry Danakil Depression . The two lakes are the groundwater-fed Afrera lake inthe north of Ethiopia and, 160 km north of it, the Abaeded lake in Eritrea . The scientific name of the genus was derived from its area of distribution.

species

In addition, cichlids of the genus were found in three wadis in Eritrea ( Danakilia sp. Sukoray). Their taxonomic status is still unclear.

features

Danakilia species have a typical cichlid shape, are stocky and reach a length of 7.4 to 9.6 cm. Danakilia dinicolai has a longer dorsal fin, which is 31.1 to 38.7% of the standard length, compared to 21.7 to 30.6% in D. franchettii . In both species, the dorsal fin is supported by 13 to 15 spine rays and 9 to 11 soft rays. The anal fin has three spines and 7 to 8 (up to 10 in D. franchettii ) soft rays. The number of vertebrae is 25-27. There are two to three rows of scales on the cheek. The pharyngeal bone in D. franchettii is short, only slightly longer than it is wide, and in the back row of adult animals it is covered with 26 to 36 large, flattened teeth. In D. dinicolai it is longer than it is wide (30 to 32% of the head length (25 to 27% in D. franchettii )) and has 40 to 48 teeth in the back row.

Systematics

Danakilia belongs in the subfamily of the Pseudocrenilabrinae (cichlids of Africa and the Middle East) to the tribe Oreochromini and is probably the closest related to Iranocichla from southern Iran and Tristramella from the Jordan Valley . The close relationship between Iranocichla and Tristramella could also be confirmed by comparing DNA sequences , but the relationship with Danakilia was not, as no DNA samples were available. The genus Sarotherodon and the cichlids of the Cameroonian Barombi Mbosee belong to the further relationship of all three genera . All cichlids from this family group are mouthbrooders .

Danger

Danakilia franchettii is of the IUCN as endangered ( Endangered ) estimated. The threat is mainly in the small distribution area, which has an area of only 125 km², and in human activities, especially for the purpose of salt extraction around the lake. Danakilia dinicolai is not listed by the IUCN.
