Lake Danao is a freshwater lake on the island of Pacijan in the Philippines , which is part of the Philippine province of Cebu . Pacijan Island is part of the Camotes Islands , which are east of Cebu Island in the Camotes Sea . With an area of 260 hectares, it is the largest inland lake in the province of Cebu. The lake has a length of around 5 km and an average water depth of 3 meters. In the lake there is a small island overgrown with coconut trees.

The lake is only supplied with fresh water by the local rains ; regular runoff is not known. In heavy rainfall , the water level can swell up to 3 meters above normal. Its aqua vegetation is determined by the water lettuce ( Pistia stratiotes ), the Panicum hemizomon , Hydrilla sp. and the thick-stemmed water hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes ). There are large coconut plantations and grain fields in the surrounding areas of the lake. Rare orchids and herbs that are harvested for medicinal purposes grow along the shores of the lake.

The lake has a large population of tilapia , carp ( Cyprinus carpio ), milk fish ( Chanos chanos ) and various types of crab and shrimp . A smaller stable population of the estuarine crocodile ( Crocodylus porosus ) lives in Lake Danao; the last killing of a crocodile is known from 1971.

On December 24, 1965, a hunting and bird sanctuary was established around the lake, which was integrated into the Island of Ponson, Poro, Pacihan Mangrove Swamp Forest Reserve on December 29, 1981 . It was one of the first protected areas under the Philippine Biodiversity Protection Act ( NIPAS ) of 1992. In 1998, the protection of the northern part of the lake was expanded and the 5.63 km² Lake Danao Natural Park was established.
