Daniel & Geo Fuchs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Fuchs (* 1966 in Alzenau ) & Geo Fuchs (* 1969 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German artist couple who have achieved international renown with their conceptual photo series.

development

Daniel & Geo Fuchs started their photographic work together back in 1992. From the beginning, Daniel & Geo Fuchs concentrated on photo series with a strongly conceptual character. The prerequisite for their work is an extremely intensive examination of their chosen topic; Each production of a series of works usually takes several months or years for research, choice of motif, material collection and test runs.

From an art historical point of view, her oeuvre is assigned to conceptual art ; her work can be located in the area of objectivity, richness of detail and staging, whereby her work is far more multifaceted.

In the initial phase, up to around 1996, the artist couple's interest focused on topics such as the homeless, transsexuals and the mentally ill. Until 2008 Daniel & Geo Fuchs worked mainly with large format cameras and tripods, a rather "slow" technique in the sense of time-consuming technology, which in its approach and implementation laid the foundation for the style of their later work.

With the advent of newer media, the artist couple began experimenting with digital techniques in 2009. Despite the supposed acceleration, nothing has changed in the seriousness and care in the conception and design as well as in the statement of their work series.

Concept and aesthetics

Daniel & Geo Fuchs' photographs have in common that they initially pretend to the viewer that they have grasped the subject at a glance. Intuitively, however, it calls for a more intensive consideration of details or arrangements, combined with the inevitable question of what was actually there at the moment of the recording and what was not. It doesn't matter whether it is an arrangement of photographed miniatures as in the Toygiants series or a mountain range as in Nature and Destruction . Regardless of whether the recordings were made in nature, in an archive or in a studio, the viewer realizes that reality and fiction must have mixed up - depending on how the respective series of works is structured, more or less tangible.

Ambivalence is one of the central characteristics in the work of Daniel & Geo Fuchs and is present in several ways. One of them is the subtle oscillation with that which cannot be present in reality and if it does, then only under different conditions. Another is walking the tightrope between the opposites - there is hardly a series of works that does not live off the antagonists death and aesthetics, destruction and beauty, decay and perfectionism. Examples are the Forces and Nature and Destruction series .

Often Daniel & Geo Fuchs' work phase leads to the next, topics and project cycles overlap or run parallel to one another. The artist couple has continued to develop in recent years through boundless curiosity and claim to themselves not to stick to the tried and tested and to keep reinventing themselves.

Through this extraordinary interest in the environment, Daniel & Geo Fuchs have developed a strong affinity for what has to be discovered, what is hidden or secret, and - in close collaboration - to the fascinating world of what has been collected and the archives. The series Conserving , Toygiants and STASI - secret rooms emerged from this affinity .

Work series

In general, Daniel & Geo Fuchs' extensive oeuvre since the beginning of their international career can be grouped into the seven major projects Conserving (1998), Famous Eyes (2000), STASI - secret rooms (2006), Toygiants (2006), Forces (2010), Nature and Destruction and - as the most recent project - The Halva Project (since 2014).

The bodies photographed for the Conserving series have one thing in common - after death they were immersed in formalin to achieve the best possible preservation, sometimes over several hundred years. At a time when photography as a medium for freezing moments and memories did not yet exist, a very unique form of sculpture in the broader sense emerged, which Daniel & Geo Fuchs worked out particularly strongly. In hardly any other project do the opponents life - death, aesthetics - discomfort touch each other in a similarly abrupt manner as in the Conserving series, which is divided into the three thematic blocks of Fish , Animals and Humans . The fascination emanating from the photographs of the preserved creatures inspired the Berlin band Rammstein to start a joint project with Daniel & Geo Fuchs. The artist couple conceived the main art concept for the band's third album production, Mutter (2001), which covered the overall aesthetics of all single releases and the cover of the Mutter album, which was very controversial in the media .

Daniel & Geo Fuchs also express their great interest in the subject in their series of works, Famous Eyes , but here they focus exclusively on the human eye. Countless well-known artists, architects and curators, including Louise Bourgeois , Sophie Calle , Sir Norman Foster , Andreas Gursky , Jürgen Klauke , David LaChapelle , Sarah Lucas , Paul McCarthy , Jonathan Meese , Shirin Neshat , Dennis Oppenheim , Katharina Sieverding , Harald Szeemann and Sam Taylor-Wood stood in front of Daniel & Geo Fuchs' camera. Although the focus in this series is on a single sensory organ, the collage-based works provide a deep insight into the personal side of the person photographed.

Daniel & Geo Fuchs became known to a broad international audience with the Toygiants series of photographs . The initial spark for this was the acquaintance with the collector Selim Varol, who owns one of the largest toy collections in the world. For Toygiants, the artist couple put toy figures of all genres such as Batman , Superman , Godzilla , Kill Bill & Co. in relation to one another and retold their stories photographically. The miniature- sized protagonists in Toygiants , recorded with a large-format camera, are shown in the exhibition space according to the proportions of real people, which means that the viewer can again face the interplay between reality and staging. The series of works became so successful internationally that parts of the edition and the resulting first publication were sold out within a few weeks.

STASI - secret rooms required an intensive time of research and exhausting and extensive paperwork in order to be granted access to buildings and archives that were not accessible to the public. For STASI - secret rooms , Daniel & Geo Fuchs photographed former rooms of power of the GDR government, created eavesdropping cells, places of violence and psychological torture, and yet they did not create any documentation in the classic sense. The photographic view of a door that is not completely closed, tattered office furniture or a portrait of Erich Honecker hanging crookedly on the wall is an artistic implementation of the signs that the GDR regime was an inherently ailing system long before the fall of the wall. The recordings were made 15 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall in rooms that Daniel & Geo Fuchs found in their original state. According to this "current state", the artist couple took photos exclusively in daylight; As the only aid, the same calculated central center point was chosen for each shot, which makes the viewer feel almost as if drawn into the room.

Forces also focuses on topics related to the military and war, but is to be viewed separately from STASI - secret rooms as a completely independent series of works and follows a different message. For Forces , Daniel & Geo Fuchs put individual objects - jet jets, weapons, hand grenades, projectiles - at the center of their photography with their inimitably sober and distant approach. Under the artistic eye of Daniel & Geo Fuchs, the hand grenade, separated from its intended purpose, the destruction, is transformed into an object of extraordinary fascination and aesthetics, the Tellermine into an object of stylish beauty.

The opponents aesthetics and destruction are also the subject of the series Nature and Destruction . Nature, as seen by Daniel & Geo Fuchs, is a supposedly perfect reproduction of what man interprets into it and hopes for it, nature as beauty and as the giver of all resources and forces - while confronting destruction at the same time of nature through human intervention. This contradiction finds a climax in the Explosions series as part of Nature and Destruction . The fascination with the breathtaking force of an explosive force, which can be a big bang from which all life emerged, is mixed with the unease about the destruction that a human-made explosion can cause. Questions about parallels to contemporary political events are raised subliminally.

The latest project by Daniel & Geo Fuchs - referred to by the artist couple as the "heart project" - is The Halva Project . Halva is the name of a Russian Toy Terrier bitch who has lived with the artist couple since October 2014. The Halva Project began with an oil portrait that the painter Gertrud Fuchs, Daniel's mother, made from a photograph of Halva. Not knowing what a sure-fire success would result from this, the artist couple published a photo of the oil portrait on the social media platform Facebook . Enthusiastic that Daniel & Geo Fuchs had taken a small dog, many artist friends were inspired by the photo and also portrayed Halva based on the template. From this Daniel & Geo Fuchs developed the idea of having artists of every genre create an artistic implementation of the small halva. In order to realize the project, Daniel & Geo Fuchs and Halva began traveling to shootings in 2015, some of which they go on in a motorhome. On their journey, which has not yet been completed, photo portraits by Halva u. a. by Anton Corbijn , Michael Wesely , Alfred Steffen and Olaf Heine .

In the development of this project, parallels can be drawn both to the trips of Bernd and Hilla Becher in their VW bus and to the travelogue Die Reise mit Charley: Auf der Suche nach Amerika by John Steinbeck , who in 1960 with his 10-year-old French poodle Charley went on a three-month trip through the USA in a specially built pickup camper to discover with new eyes the country where the writer grew up and which he described in his novels.

In contrast to John Steinbeck's project, the dog in Daniel & Geo Fuchs' project is not just a travel companion, but the reason for the trip. The goals are meeting points with the most well-known representatives of the art world, who artistically interpret the Russian Toy Terrier bitch Halva. Both the idea and the implementation make this project a unique one in the art world, Halva is the first dog that will have been photographed, painted or drawn by a large number of artists at an indefinitely dated end of the project.

There was a tragic incident in April 2016 when the halva, who weighs only 1.8 kg with a shoulder instep height of 20 cm, suffered a serious accident in which she was run over by a cyclist. Halva's life hung by a thread for days as she suffered severe injuries to her skull and cervical spine. It borders on a miracle that the bitch survived the accident after weeks of convalescence completely unscathed and does not have to live with any sequelae.

Exhibition conditions

Daniel & Geo Fuchs already include the respective form of presentation in the exhibition room in the process of producing their photo series. A recurring feature is the large format, which is an external attribute, but not an attribute that is detached from the content. The large format enables the viewer to devote himself to the richness of detail of each individual work. The toys in Toygiants , which find their presence in the oversized enlargement, are captivating because the attention is drawn to components to which otherwise negligible or no importance is attached. Traces of use such as scratches or paint applications that were not accurately applied during production make it clear which individual history each serially manufactured product can have.

According to the style of a formalized body, which is usually kept in a glass container, the photographs of the Conserving series are concealed as cibachrome behind 15 mm thick acrylic glass with a polished edge, which suggests the desired effect of a medicinal preparation floating in liquid.
