Daniel Adam z Veleslavína (born August 31, 1546 in Veleslavín , † October 18, 1599 in Prague ) was one of the most important writers, historians and publishers of humanism in Bohemia . Through his activities he influenced Czech literature to such an extent that an entire epoch was named after him ("Veleslavínská doba").

Life

Daniel z Veleslavína studied at the Charles University in Prague ; from 1569 to 1575 he was a professor there.

He was married to Anna, the daughter of the printer Georg Melantrich von Aventin , and later inherited his printing workshop. Its main activity was the organization of the printing, proofreading and translations. As a patron, he contributed to the development of the Czech language . Daniel Adam's “Silva quadrilinguis” was the best known of the various Latin-Czech and Czech-Latin dictionaries in the 16th century.

He was also a secret member of the Bohemian Brothers . He was later raised to the nobility.

The name addition z Veleslavína means from Veleslavín ( German Weleslawin), a place that was incorporated into Prague in 1922 .

  • His most famous work is a historical calendar from 1575 called "Veleslavínský kalendář".
