Daniel Barbier ( December 10, 1907 , † April 1, 1965 ) was a French astronomer .

Life

Barbier studied at an École normal supérieure with a focus on mathematics . He did his doctorate with a thesis on the statistical analysis of long-period binary star systems , evaluating observations from the observatories in Paris and Marseille . Then began a long-term collaboration with Daniel Chalonge in the field of stellar photometry . Between 1930 and 1965 he published more than 200 scientific papers on astronomy, including papers on the composition of stellar atmospheres and the occurrence of lunar and solar eclipses . He also explored the upper atmosphere of the earth , polar lights and the zodiacal light . Together with Daniel Chalonge, at the Institut d'Astrophysique in Paris, he determined the height of the ozone layer at 50 to 80 kilometers using measurements .

Awards

  • 1934 - Prix Lalande of the French Academy of Sciences for his research on binary star systems
  • 1949 - Prix Isaac Robert of the French Astronomical Society
  • 1960 - Prix Deslandres of the Academy of Sciences for his research into atmospheric glow and polar lights
  • 1964 - Prix Vaillant of the Academy of Sciences for the study of the development of the tropical night sky glow in the 630 nm range

The lunar crater Barbier and the asteroid (37853) Danielbarbier were named in his memory .
