Daniel Mulhall , also Dan (born April 1955 in Waterford ) is an Irish diplomat.

Life

Daniel Mulhall studied literature and history at University College Cork (UCC) and Murdoch University in Western Australia and received his PhD. He entered the diplomatic service in 1978. In Ireland worked in various functions and from 1994 onwards he worked for the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation , which was supposed to pacify the Northern Ireland conflict . His assignments abroad took him to New Delhi , Vienna , the EU in Brussels and as Consul General in Edinburgh . From 2001 to 2005 he was the Irish ambassador for the Southeast Asian states of Malaysia , Thailand , Laos and Vietnam , based in Kuala Lumpur . From 2005 he was back in Dublin and acted there as EU Director General . He was Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2009 to 2013 . He has been the Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland in London since 2013.

Mulhall is a specialist in James Joyce research.
