Daniel Jackson (* 1. January 1937 in San Diego , † 27. August 2014 in San Diego) was an American jazz - saxophonist , pianist, composer and music educator who was active in the music scene of San Diego.

Live and act

Jackson was born in the La Jolla neighborhood , north of downtown San Diego . He learned the saxophone as a teenager - influenced by Harold Land . After graduating from San Diego High School, he played from 1956 to 1959 during his military service in a US Air Force band in Illinois, where he met Wes Montgomery and Jack McDuff . First recordings were made in 1959 for Pacific Jazz Records in New York as a member of the Four Souls , a band led by Lennie McBrowne . In New York he also wrote music for Cannonball Adderley . In the following years he worked as a saxophonist a. a. in the bands of Ray Charles and Buddy Rich . In his later years he performed as a pianist in various jazz clubs in San Diego; In 2013 Jackson received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Diego Music Awards . He had his last appearance at a benefit concert in his favor in April 2014 at Club Dizzy's . He influenced musicians from San Diego such as Mark Dresser , Bob Magnusson , Arthur Blythe , Jamie Shadowlight , Dave Scott , Gilbert Castellanos , James Zollar and Mitch Manker ; He was also the mentor of saxophonist Hollis Gentry and keyboardist Carl Evans, Jr. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 16 recording sessions between 1960 and 2006. Jackson died of bladder cancer in Rancho Penasquitos in August 2014 at the age of 77 .
