Daniel Alexander "Danny" Jordaan (born September 3, 1951 in Port Elizabeth ) is a South African politician and football official . He headed the bid committee that brought the 2010 Soccer World Cup to South Africa and was Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from 2015 to 2016 .

Life

Jordaan was classified as Colored during the apartheid period . He was active as a cricket and soccer player from 1970 to 1983 . He attended the University of the Western Cape (UWC), from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . He then earned an honors degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA). In the early 1970s he became a member of the South African Students' Organization (SASO), which was related to the Black Consciousness Movement . He later became a member of the United Democratic Front and finally the African National Congress (ANC), of which he is still a member.

From 1979 to 1987 he was a teacher, then he was a senior lecturer at Dower College in Port Elizabeth. In 1994 he was elected to the National Assembly as an ANC MP in the first free elections in 1994 . He was with her until 1997 when he became Chief Executive Officer of the South African Football Association (SAFA). He was responsible for Cape Town's application to host the 2004 Summer Olympics , the narrowly unsuccessful application to host the 2006 World Cup, and the successful application in 2010 and subsequent hosting. In 2013 he was elected President of SAFA. He has also been a member of FIFA's Marketing and TV Board since 1998 .

On 28 May 2015 he became the ANC as mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality sworn in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.

End of May 2015 was to Jordaan, FIFA and CONCACAF -Funktionär Jack Warner in 2008 on the FIFA headquarters in Zurich to have paid ten million US dollars, the FIFA South Africa originally had intended. However, the payment was not related to the application for the soccer World Cup.

In the local elections in August 2016 , the ANC lost a majority of the seats on the Metropolitan Council. Athol Trollip of the Democratic Alliance became mayor in Jordaan's place . Jordaan became opposition leader in Nelson Bay Municipality, but announced his resignation in October 2016.

In October 2017, singer Jennifer Ferguson accused Jordaan of raping her 24 years ago. Jordaan denied the claim.

Awards

  • In 2011, Jordaan received the Order of Ikhamanga in gold for his services to the 2010 Soccer World Cup .
