Darda (German: Lanzenau ) is a municipality in northeastern Croatia , which consists of the four villages Darda, Mece, Ugljes and Svajcarnica. It is part of the Osijek-Baranja County . Approx. 7000 people of various ethnic groups live in the community, mainly Croatians , Serbs , Hungarians , Roma and others.

The main economic branch of the fertile municipality is agriculture with the large Belje dd group as the engine of the region.

location

From a geographical point of view, this municipality is of great importance not only because of the short distance (10 km) from Osijek , the seat of the Osijek-Baranja County , but also because the highway and the Croatian Railway that run through Darda connect Osijek with Hungary. Darda is also located with the municipalities of Bilje and Čeminac in the south-western part of the Baranja , so its history stands out from that of neighboring Slavonia .

history

The strategic importance of this area has long been known, since Darda was already used as a strategic connection point between Osijek and Budapest in Roman times . The first documents in which Darda was mentioned date back to 1410, when Darda belonged to Ladislav Sigetti. But the oldest population register in Darda was only published in 1690 and it shows that 75 families lived in this area at that time.

Settlements and population

Today the municipality of Darda consists of four settlements with a total of 6,908 inhabitants (2011 census).

The four settlements are called:

• Darda (5.323 inhabitants)
• Mece (882 inhabitants)
• Švajcarnica (196 inhabitants)
• Uglješ (507 inhabitants)

People of different nationalities live in the municipality of Darda:

• Serbs -1,603 (23.20%)

From an economic point of view, Darda Belje is the most important company involved in the production of food. Some of the residents of Darda run small farms (family businesses).

education

Since the community of Darda is not particularly large, there is only one elementary and secondary school and the Radost kindergarten. But Darda also supports the students in their further school career with scholarships.
